When the first signs of fall appear so do my cravings this delicious cinnamon apple crisp.  Just one taste of this delicious dessert will having you wanting more.  As a bonus, it’s prepped and in the oven in about 30 minutes.  

What's In This Delicious Recipe

There are only 8 ingredients in the base recipe and 5 ingredients in the topping.  This healthy dessert is gluten and refined sugar free.  The addition of fresh thyme adds a subtle savory note to the  sweet flavors of this classic recipe.

What makes this recipe so Delicious?

Using crisp apples is always best and prevents the apples from becoming mushy.  We add in sugar free apple juice, delicious maple syrup, and as we mentioned, fresh thyme.

Cinnamon Apple Crisp Topping

There is nothing like good ole oats.  In our recipe we used old-fashioned rolled oats.  In addition to the oats we add, almond flour, sliced almonds, honey (a good local source is best) and unsalted butter.

If you have almonds and no almond flour you can use your food processor to make your own almond flour.

Place about 1/4 cup at a time in the food processor.  Pulse spin it until you have a flour-like consistency.  Be sure to sift it and place any larger pieces back into your processor.  Just repeat until you have the correct amount of flour.

Cinnamon Apple Crisp

Delicious Baked Cinnamon Apple Crisp

Ingredients

  • 6 large Apples, cored, peeled, and sliced
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon juice, fresh is best
  • 1/3 cup real maple syrup
  • 2 Tbsp 100% apple juice, sugar free is best
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 1/2 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Topping Ingredients:
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup almond flour
  • 1/3 cup almonds, sliced
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: Serve with
  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
  • Freshly whipped cream

Instructions

  • Place top oven rack in its center position and pre-heat oven to 350°F.
  • Grease an 8" x 8" baking dish and set aside.
  • Place apples in a large non-reactive bowl and toss with fresh lemon juice. Add maple syrup, apple juice, cinnamon, allspice, thyme leaves, and salt. Toss to combine and set aside.
  • Combine topping ingredients in a separate bowl and stir until oats are thoroughly coated and all ingredients are well combined. Set aside.
  • Pour apple mixture into prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer. Spread the topping evenly across the top in a uniform layer, as well.
  • Place into pre-heated oven and bake for 30 minutes. If the top layer is nicely browned, cover dish loosely with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning.
  • Continue baking for another 15-20 minutes or until the apple crisp is nice and bubbling.
  • Remove from oven and set aside to cool for 5-10 minutes.
  • Serve warm with some vanilla bean iced cream or freshly whipped cream, if desired. Enjoy!
